Beauties
of Datça are innumerable and it is impossible to recount every
one of them. The three we will mention are old and ravaged by time but
still beautiful. We said they are old, but they will still be standing
after we are long gone. As we tell you about these beauties, we burn
with desire to do something for their future adventures.
WIND
MILLS;
In the Kizlan region, on the way to Marmaris you will see the wind mills.
But they no longer greet us; they stand tired and sullen. Maybe they
are angry with us for severing their arms, separating them from their
winds. Or maybe they are angry at being robbed of their sand and seeing
ugly buildings rise with that sand. Why are they being punished ? As
if they did harm to us. Guess how many of them are there? If you said
5, you're wrong; there are 6 of them. One's interior is sturdy and tidy
as if built yesterday. Some of them were bought by Datça lovers!
But why, we don't know. Maybe to build dreams. And that is what happens
right now, the mills' destiny of abandonment did not change with changing
hands.
Let's imagine; wind mills being restorated and working again. The pond
is full of water, giving life to the gardens of the restaurants, playgrounds
and discoteques opened under the shadow cast by the merry wind mills,
embracing the wind. The mills happy are happy
once again and imagine the contribution this dream can make to the tourism
of Datça. Maybe it is your turn to dream now.
RESADIYE
MANSION;
The art historians call it one of the most beautiful examples of contemporary
Turkish architecture. When you take a tour of the mansion, it is obvious
that it is a well lived place, full of pleasant memories. The mansion
does not have an atmosphere of laziness or clumsiness like other mansions,
it is full of energy and life. Its adornments are disappearing, some
clever visitors have taken them, bit by bit. Every part of the mansion
is beautiful but the little turkish bath is a real delight.
ILICA
LAKE;
Ilica lake is just situated where the sea meets the land. The wise craftsmen
of old times decided to build a water mill here and this shiny and warm
lake turned the wheels of the mills for many years. You can swim with
turtles in its warm waters or get a massage from its waterfall. Some
call this lake that is tired from carrying waters to the mediterranean,
the Byzantium Pool. It is also said to have some healing powers.
OLD
DADYA;
2,5 kilometers away from the Iskele district, you will see a yellow
sign post. If you take the turn, you will be met by a distinctive village.
It name is derived from the ancient word "stadya". This village
was the center of Datça before it moved to the coast. Now it
is just a village but you should definitely pay a visit to this place.
The architecture is strictly original displaying the characteristics
of the region. All buildings and roads are stonework. The stonemasons
compete each other by their work, their work is artistic indeed. This
village is a good example of what can be accomplished if people care
about the place they live. It has a modest street, Can Yücel. Ahmet
Gürkan who put much effort to the conservation of the village has
a house there and also there is the Antique Bar, they are both places
to see. Dede pension, the house of the late poet Can Yücel whom
the street is named after and Canevi built in the honour of the poet
are also beautiful sites. The poet's grave is not in Old Dadya, you
should go to the city cemetery to see the "Can Stone" made
from marble by the sculptor Mehmet Aksoy.
At this point, we would like to cite from Atilla Altan, a lecturer in
Maltepe University on rchitecture and who contributed so much to Old
Dadya with his ideas and labour. His writing about his love to the village
and his stone house reflects the atmosphere of Old Dadya beautifully.
